In this highly contentious scene, the presence of the filmmaker behind the camera is acknowledged and questioned. Throughout his ethnographic research, Maple used video in part to be attentive to forms of observation he might have otherwise neglected. Working in a visual medium compelled him to be attuned to dimensions of social life not expressed in language, such as gestures and embodied experiences.
